I have so many incredible records that he added his golden touch to. He probably had more influence on dance music than the producers themselves. He created massive, full, powerful sounding records and anytime you heard something that was mastered by him, you knew it instantly. He will be sorely missed.

Well paced in it's delivery of sporadic sounds that resemble machines squawking, doors being unlocked in spaceships and digital alarms signaling transitions and arrivals in ghost realms. Meanwhile, the drums start stacking and the pace gets going until a polyrhythmic flow ensues. This was my favorite era for drum and bass. I lost touch with it over the years and the Dubstep genre comes off as too derivative and over-hyped. There have been a few things i've heard that i liked but i prefer 96-98 era just fine.

A huge record within the techno circles i found myself in when i first got into dance music and djing in 1994. There's an incredible story about a local dj that traded all his records to another for this one record. Upon receiving the Mover record, he smashed it to pieces. Dark techno that takes you into the outer reaches of space and shows you how cold it can be. Goth as fuck. Great tune.

I haven't posted anything on here in awhile. I guess i've been doing too much tumblin and painting in the meanwhile. And have been really obsessed with this performance. I had some tremendous visions of the Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear disaster around the time this video was posted. For me, this is the soundtrack to that terrible incident, a snapshot of life on the edge of complete and utter destruction. Liz is a master of her craft and i find this session completely hypnotizing. Turn it up!

I have made the mistake many times over the years when it comes to getting new records. There was a time when i was really obsessed with djing and keeping up with new music. To do so, that required a lot of time in record shops going through stacks and stacks of new releases, listening to each track for about 10 seconds and deciding if what you were hearing through the headphones was the one you were meant to find. Records were expensive. An import 12 inch was around $9 to $11, with domestics at around $5-$7. Much of my life i have been broke and it was incredibly expensive to keep up with this habit. Many shops would do trade, old records = store credit for new.
I was reminded today of this brilliant Reload record that i had, traded and forgot about.

Still a good track but for some reason or another, i let it go. Dumb.
The whole dynamic of djing has changed drastically over the years (you don't need me to tell you that story) and music is available for free everywhere now. If there were a good shop near by that sold current dance records, i would be there, but there's not and that habit has been quieted severely.

The first dance record i ever bought was a double pack on the Touché label in 1996.
Carl Craig was such a huge influence on me and his tracks were the first that got me into
techno and wanting to learn how to dj. I only recently found out that this is version that is
on the double pack is remixed by Orlando Voorn. Orlando is a phenomenal producer
and exploration into his work i will save for another post.

This is the jam that totally won me over to Carl Craig's sound. I actually was fortunate enough
to hear him perform this live at a new year's eve party in Los Angeles (i think in 1995/1996?)
What i remember of that night was him on stage just using a Kurzweil synth (i'm sure there was
other external gear but that's all i saw). Simple, raw and completely addictive. Detroit techno
resonated with me on such a level that i never knew possible and after that night, i was never
the same.

i will admit that i catch on to things really late.

i had been weary of Kid Creole for many years, why i don't know.
just found this record the other day while record digging
(it has it's original "super saver series" sticker and a price tag of $6.98 on it.)
i bought it for $5 dollars american and its sooooo good.
this song brings me joy, i think about warm new york, the early spring there and catching a nice breeze through the canyons of that great city.

there is a certain tone in many of Cari Lekebusch's tracks that make me think of warm nights, empty streets, ghettos
filled with families living in shacks, bicycles squeaking through the darkness and the sound of the sea at night.
it's like he is transmitting ancient tribal bass tones and haunted melodies through his samplers and
compressing them until you can almost feel its texture, smell the dirt and sweat rising through the mist.
this is one such track.

had a strange dream about Sonic Youth last night.

i was at a party or something and they were all there, hanging out.

everything was very mellow, almost muted.

they looked younger than i had seen them in recent promos for the latest album, The Eternal.

i remember telling Thurston that he looked like he was 'doing well.'

he had a reel-to-reel tape machine that had two regular cassette deck faces on it besides the reels.

one of them was a Nakamichi.

i was amazed, i had never seen anything like that.

i remember talking with the drummer for a long time.

we really hit it off.

really can't remember what we talked about but he was very friendly.

Kim was hanging out too.

at one point i was combing her hair. it was almost 3 feet long. she didn't seem to mind

nor did Thurston.

everything was natural, like i had been quickly assimilated into their crew of friends

and there were no feelings of caution.

Lee and i joked about things i can't remember.

sometimes all the details of dreams are right there, right at the tip of my tongue,

on the edge of my mind and i can recall everything.

other times its just bits and pieces.

as the dream faded, my surroundings became blurry and i was pulling back into

the waking world.

at the last moment i thought, "i will see them in the flesh in october."
